In the last years of World War II in the hills of Tuscany, the noble family, the Rosatis, have their idyllic life interrupted when the arrival of two soldiers bring the war to the Rosatis's front steps. What follows is one family's struggle that doesn't end with the war as a serial killer starts targeting the Rosati family in 1955.
Overall, Christopher Bohjalian's murder mystery novel was fascinating. The complexity of war life shine throughout the book, and the perceptions and judgments of neighbors for actions that families had to do to survive made this novel feel very authentic. But the alternating perspectives, sometimes intertwined with another character's perspective in the same chapter, felt choppy and did not flow seamlessly.
